Two iconic horror films are set to return in stunning high definition in the United Kingdom. As part of “The Film Vault” series, Stanley Kubrick’s cult classic The Shining (1980), starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd, and Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist (1982), produced by Steven Spielberg, will both be released on 25 August 2025 in special edition Steelbook formats.
Each film will be available as a combo pack, containing both Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, housed in a premium PET slipcase. Additionally, both titles will receive exclusive “Collector’s Edition” versions, which include a double-sided poster, five character cards and three behind-the-scenes cards, offering a deeper dive into these horror masterpieces for dedicated fans and collectors alike.
The discs themselves are identical to earlier editions distributed by Warner Home Video, and are expected to feature the original German-language audio in Dolby Digital format, among other language options.
The Shining: A Descent into Madness
In The Shining, Jack Torrance (portrayed by Jack Nicholson) takes on a winter caretaker role at the remote Overlook Hotel. Isolated in the Colorado mountains, the hotel has a dark history — a previous caretaker murdered his family before taking his own life. Hoping for peace and quiet to work on his novel, Jack gradually succumbs to the malevolent forces within the hotel. Strange voices, ghostly apparitions and psychological torment push him to the brink of madness in a chilling tale of possession and paranoia.
Poltergeist: When Suburbia Turns Supernatural
Poltergeist follows the seemingly ordinary Freeling family who move into a new home in the California suburb of Cuesta Verde. What begins as a dream life soon unravels. After the family’s pet canary, Tweety, dies, their young daughter Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) begins to sleepwalk and communicates with voices emanating from a television’s static. As supernatural events escalate, including an ominous tornado and a tree that appears to come alive, Carol Anne mysteriously vanishes — her voice echoing through the house, calling out from beyond.
With their eerie atmospheres and psychological depth, both The Shining and Poltergeist have become benchmarks of the horror genre. Their re-release in these deluxe editions presents a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to experience — or revisit — two of the most influential and spine-chilling films in cinematic history in the highest available visual quality.
The arrival of these editions marks another highlight in “The Film Vault” collection, offering not just upgraded visuals, but also tangible collector’s items that celebrate the legacy of these horror landmarks.
